The difference we make together

'They arrive in a warm jacket and their shoes, and the food they need is here. That's absolutely amazing. And the parents are very, very grateful for that.' – KidsCan partner ECE teacher

Our mission

We believe education equals opportunity and no child should be too cold, wet, or hungry to learn. Which is why we provide the essentials to Kiwi kids in hardship: nutritious food, warm clothing, sturdy shoes, and headlice treatment, so they can focus on learning.

157,000 Kiwi children are experiencing material hardship

Going without the essentials like proper shoes, a warm raincoat, and nutritious meals affects every part of a child’s life: their cognitive development, physical and mental health, school attendance and achievement, and ultimately, their future opportunities. But once these children have these essentials they feel fuelled, comfortable and ready to engage.

The impact we make

Each year, we survey our partner schools and early childhood centres to hear the impact of our programmes.

    Food

Teachers tell us sometimes parents will keep children home rather than send them to school with nothing to eat – out of shame. Others face the anxiety of opening an empty lunchbox. The certainty of food at school means children can attend knowing they'll be fuelled through the day. In our partner ECE centres, eating together helps children develop social skills and the confidence to try new food. Staff report children are more settled, focused and happy.

    Clothing

Schools report that some children arrive at school in freezing conditions wearing only a t-shirt, or without proper footwear. Other parents keep children home on cold or wet days because they don’t have adequate clothing. Providing jackets and shoes helps children arrive warm, dry and ready to learn. Teachers tell us the impact is significant: attendance rises and children feel a greater sense of wellbeing.

    Health

Headlice can also stop children attending school. For some parents, it’s a choice between spending money on treatment or putting food on the table. Left untreated, lice can lead to infections. KidsCan's free nit treatment and combs helps remove stigma and allows children to attend school able to focus.
Going into primary, I didn't have any school shoes. So, I just wore my brother’s beat-up shoes. I was real conscious about it. People used to look down on me. But I got used to the beat-up shoes and how people saw me in them. But when I popped into the school office, surprisingly, there were free jackets and shoes to wear. I've never been happier opening a box of brand-new shoes. I’ve remembered that moment. They were really comfortable. And when they got run down, then I'd go into the office for another pair. Without KidsCan I wouldn’t be warm walking to school or have new shoes on my feet. It made me less insecure about how I look. I was just going to school in these new fresh shoes and jacket and I was ready to learn.
