Our school programme

Every child wants to learn – but for some, poverty stands in their way. KidsCan’s school programme aims to ensure children have the essentials so they can attend school regularly and thrive both in and outside the classroom.

Removing barriers to education

KidsCan's products are available for schools to use in whatever way works best for their students. Many schools run breakfast and lunch clubs which are open to all students to reduce stigma. Others have toasters and snack baskets in classrooms. We offer a warm jacket for every student – many schools make this part of their uniform. By supporting all students, we help create a more inclusive and equitable school environment where no child is singled out. This support fosters a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing.

Most schools order shoes, socks and health products as needed, so they can offer these discreetly.

KidsCan partners with more than 900 schools and kura nationwide

KidsCan has been operating for 20 years. We started out supporting 40 low decile schools in Auckland with raincoats and snacks, and we now partner with more than a third of all schools nationwide, offering a full suite of products: breakfast food, snacks, hot lunches, jackets, shoes, socks and health products. Every day, we fuel tens of thousands of students for learning.

Our school programme is designed to enable children to arrive in class warm, fuelled and ready to learn. Once you’re a KidsCan partner school, our support is available for the long haul. Staff order what you need from us – because you know the best way to meet the needs of your tamariki. The programme is designed to be mana-enhancing, reducing the stigma which children in poverty can face. Together, we can make a difference.

Food

The online food portal is open during the last four weeks of term so schools can order for the upcoming term. Once orders are placed, deliveries happen in the first two weeks of the term.

How our support works

  • Apply & assess

Fill out an application form so we can better understand the support you and your tamariki require. Schools are then assessed and welcomed onboard, based on available funding.
  • Access

Once you've been accepted into our programme, you'll have access to food, clothing and health products – and the ongoing support of our friendly team.
  • Order & receive

Order all products via our online portal. Food is packed and delivered nationwide each term, and clothing, shoes and health products are sent as as needed.

Our impact

“I have cried a lot since KidsCan came on board – tears of relief and joy for what we have been able to do for our students. Shoes to keep their feet dry, jackets to keep them warm, beautiful healthy food that means not only are they well fed but also more settled. But something we didn’t expect … you have developed in our students the ability to not be ashamed about asking for help, to be vulnerable. The difference you make is incalculable.” – Principal
